What do they do at your studio? What would you prefer? When it comes to choosing
1. style of dance
and
2. music

Should students be involved in discussing this with the choreographers before solo instructions starts, or just have it introduced when it is played in the first solo class and the teacher puts the student on the spot by asking...So what do you think?!?

I think as the dancer gets older (teens) they should have some input on the music. Something along the lines of sitting with the choreographer listening to some music to come to an agreement. I think this is an important part of the maturation of the dancer. I don't think younger dancers are ready to participate in this process. Oh yeah...as a parent I don't expect to have any input into song selection. However, I would say something if I felt the song was inappropriate. Luckily, I've never had that happen.

I agree that older students should have some sort of input on the music, but not necessarily the style of solo. I think that should be left up to the teacher/Artistic Director.

My daughter has been "put on the spot" by teachers before, hasn't liked the music, and has been dropped like a stone. When another teacher offered to do a solo with her, he sat down and listened to music with her. The result at competitions - 1st overall!
